Houdini (1874-1926)

HOUDINI’S FAILED PROMISE

Budapest, Hungary-born magician Houdini died fittingly on Halloween day, October 31, in New York City, after ignoring persistent symptoms of acute peritonitis. In life, he freed himself from straightjackets, locked boxes and the famous Chinese water torture many times, but in death he was unable to fulfill his promise to contact wife Bess Raymond from beyond the grave. Thousand of mourners attended his funeral, which started the break of a wand tradition, performed to this day at a magician’s death. He’s buried at the Machpelah Cemetery, on Long Island.
